As co-chairs of the Consumer Goods Forum’s Global Packaging Project, Roger Zellner and Sonia Raja are heading
one of the most important global initiatives facing sustainability and packaging: the pursuit of a common industry
language and standards that all can follow and use. This session will help attendees understand some of the key changes
affecting global packaging, including:

  • New efforts by top global manufacturers and retailers to develop packaging
    solutions that meet sustainability goals
  • How packaging development must work from a common platform with
    uniform standards worldwide
  • How the world’s key brand owners in Europe and North America are
    working together to make their packaging more sustainable


The Eco-labeling Debate in Paperboard Packaging
Ian Hanna, Director of Development, Forest Stewardship Council - US
Jason Metnick, Senior Director, Market Access and Product Labeling,
    Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI)

Ian Hanna of Forest Stewardship Council will outline some of the key issues that will face the packaging industry
in the growing area of eco-labeling for forestry-based packaging and the need for more clarity and engagement.

This session will also include a discussion on two prominent certification programs, the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)
and its use by the Rainforest Alliance and SFI’s eco-labeling program. The two will discuss:

  • Sustainable sourcing solutions and the role of certification
  • Steps the packaging industry needs to take to ensure that eco-labeling
    succeeds and consumers understand its value
  • The crucial ability to label packages properly


ISTA Packaging Sustainability by A Universal Approach

Chair - International Safe Transit Association

The International Safe Transit Association (ISTA) has created a document that provides packaging professionals
with a detailed approach to package design that will have a direct impact on reducing product damage and
improving the sustainability performance of the packaging value chain.  You’ll discover:

  • A process for the successful creation of an optimized package that delivers
    a safe and efficacious product to the customer
  • A new universal design protocol that provides a logical, sequential,
    step-by-step means for creating a sustainable package
  • An assessment of packaging within the context of the product
    and its functional role

Harmonization Standards: An Update
Victor Bell, President, Environmental Packaging Intl. (EPI)

Prominent environmental packaging consultant Victor Bell will follow up Joan Pierce’s presentation by offering
a brief overview of efforts to harmonize global packaging standards. He’ll provide up-to-date information on work being
done in the areas of ISO process standards and data requirements for the Global Packaging Project and international
fee programs, work that will affect how packaging operates on the global market.

the pilot phase that is scheduled to launch in early 2011, and:

A new area for packaging in the sustainability arena is that of carbon offsetting as a means to reduce carbon footprint.
Carbonfund.org is helping lead that charge in North America with its CarbonFree product certification program.

    carbon footprint

Tackling the Problem of PLA Scrap

BioCor raised recent waves in the packaging industry with its aggressive approach to the problem of recycling
polylactic acid and its difficulty in contaminating the plastics recycling stream. This session will reveal:

  • How biopolymers will benefit form the collection of PLA scrap and
    finding new means to recycle PLA
  • Newly emerging global efforts to create a recycling infrastructure that
    will break down PLA to its lactic acid feedstocks
  • Progress made in PLA recycling initiatives and its eventual impact
